TESTING

Times are changing in the Sogeti Studio…

Here in the Sogeti Studio lots of changes have been taking place. Traditional values of testing are being challenged and a new view of the digital space is taking place both technically and culturally.

Here in the Sogeti Studio lots of changes have been taking place. Traditional values of testing are being challenged and a new view of the digital space is taking place both technically and culturally.

The key changes are the principles that are applied as part of working within the Studio:

1 ) Leave your role at the door

Here in the studio we are very aware that roles are a poor benchmarking exercise in regards to capability. Therefore, we focus on skills and experience over certifications and role names. Similar to flat management structures that some companies employ we focus on utilizing people’s skills, passion and experience.

2 ) The idea factory

No idea is a bad one if you’ve put some thought into it. Once the thought has gone in it’s time to try and make it fail, that’s right fail. Similar to the X project (previously Google X) we focus using enthusiastic critique on our ideas as a group. If the idea continually stands up, then it’s a good direction to be heading in.

3 ) Talk, collaborate and deliver

Working together, pairing with people with different skills delivering at a high paced yet controlled environment is great experience.

4 ) All technology has its place

We take time to review all products whether open source or proprietary to see which environment they would best suit. Technology can often help but it has to be the right technology to support your goal.

Lastly, and most importantly, driving a pragmatic delivery culture to break away from the traditional and often time draining sequential models. We want to build fast within a continuous integration framework, fail fast to learn and improve quickly.

All this comes down to our culture within the Studio. We are working very hard to change perceptions and give our colleagues a reason to come to work, not a just a place to go to work.

We want to challenge the status quo at every opportunity and start with why….

“Why is this the way we’ve always done it?”

“Why can’t we do better?”

“Why can’t things change?”

Many companies use the People, Processes and Tools approach to defining their world and applying value to it. We feel this has detracted from the humans that deliver this so we’re driving the Culture, Capability and Technology.

Without the correct culture there will always be a fear of change. Adopting something new is a discontinuous process in many people’s lives and there is a fear of failure, therefore we changed our view of failure to be positive. It’s better to find failure early and try something new than continue down a pointless path.

Capability is our way of shifting the view from process as it should be about what works and what doesn’t. Being able to talk, analyse and pivot when needed is key. It also helps drives focus of skills as we all have multiple talents and there should be an accepting environment for people to apply themselves across multiple roles.

Technology is an enabler, it’s nothing without the culture and capability supporting it. Companies will sell their tools with reckless abandon and rightly so it’s their livelihood. Here at the studio we take the burden of this by experiencing many tools across the market to ensure we advise on the right tool, for the right job for the capability in your organization.

While writing this we are well aware that this is, well, a little ‘preachy’. It’s hard to explain and something that should be experienced….. So come and take a look!
